Facing Alzheimer’s with Optimism: A Conversation with Malcolm Fast FCPA, FCA

May 15, 2025

MM Banner Malcolm Fast

Malcolm Fast FCPA, FCA, embodies gratitude as he faces Alzheimer’s with optimism, embracing the opportunities that have shaped his life.

Malcolm has had a significant impact on the profession. From a thriving career as a CPA to establishing CPA Forum North, his life story is one of impact and inspiration. Malcolm displays unwavering optimism and an inspiring perspective despite being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease

Malcolm shares that the diagnosis didn’t come as a shock, as Alzheimer’s has affected multiple members of his family, including his father and uncle. After receiving his diagnosis, he stumbled across an article in the science section of his favourite magazine, The Economist. The piece discussed a new Alzheimer’s medication. “I made an appointment with my doctor right away,” Malcolm recalls. However, the article mentioned that the medication wouldn’t be available in Canada until 2025. “40 mins later, [after the start of the appointment] I walked out with a prescription in my hands,” he says.

He is profoundly grateful for the opportunities the medication has provided. “It is giving me a couple of extra years of joyful functioning,” he says. While the medication may not cure the disease, he remarks, “it changed my outlook on life massively—it gave me hope.” Within months of starting the medication, Malcolm experienced notable improvements in his communication, which he says created opportunities, including “being able to have this conversation with you today.” After two years on the medication, he acknowledges its imperfections but considers it immensely beneficial.

Malcolm is a true example of someone who has an uncertain road ahead but has faced it with an optimistic outlook on what life can be. When asked about his positive outlook on life despite his situation, Malcolm reflects on the experiences of his father and other family members with Alzheimer’s. He noted how profoundly different his journey has been in comparison. This contrast has deepened his sense of gratitude and is evident in him consciously embracing thankfulness for his circumstances.

Malcolm concluded the conversation by reflecting on his time as a CPA. He said two words stand out to him: “pride” and “appreciation.” Pride in the profession, and appreciation for the fulfilling career and opportunities it has brought him.
